Nano bookings begin: Filmmaker Muzaffar Ali was the first to book a Nano at midnight at the State Bank of India in Lucknow.

With the hope of owning the world’s cheapest car by July, people in large numbers thronged Tata Group stores and State Bank of India branches on Thursday to get forms to book the Rs.1-lakh Nano, launched last month.

Nano bookings begin: Filmmaker Muzaffar Ali was the first to book a Nano at midnight at the State Bank of India in Lucknow.

Tata Motors is making the forms available at around 30,000 centres across India. The booking closes on April 25. There was no immediate picture available on the number of bookings done on the opening day.

Besides Tata Motors showrooms, the forms, which cost Rs.300 each, are available at Tata Group ventures including Titan showrooms, Tata Indicom centres, Westside and Croma stores. These stores are also offering discounts to customers on purchase of the forms. One person can submit only one form.

Tata Motors has State Bank of India as its main partner to sell and receive the forms, while other banks are also offering loans to book the car. Customers can either pay the entire booking amount or seek finance from 15 other banks. Booking can be done online.

The three variants of the Nano are priced between Rs.1.23 lakh and Rs.1.72 lakh in Delhi. The booking amount is between Rs.95,000 and Rs.1.4 lakh.

Tata Motors Finance will provide a 100 per cent loan for the booking at an interest rate of 12 per cent to 13 per cent with a three-year tenure.

There is no cap on the number of forms to be sold during the 17-day period, but the launch price will be applicable only to one lakh customers who will be chosen through a computerised draw within 60 days of the close of bookings. Applicants will have the option to retain their booking even if they do not get an allotment in the first phase at the initial price.

Tata Group has started producing the Nano at its plant in Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, only last month — around 4,000 units a month. The carmaker hopes to produce just about 50,000 of them this year. The new dedicated plant at Sanand in Gujarat will be ready by early-2010. It will have an initial annual capacity of 2.50 lakh units. This will be scalable to five lakh units.

Response in Kolkata

Raktima Bose reports:

Typifying the mood elsewhere, Nano fever gripped Kolkata on Thursday. Scores of buyers as well as curious onlookers crowded Tata Motors showrooms.

While some were busy assuring themselves about the robustness of the displayed model by tapping its body or viewing the engine, others were involved in conversations with showroom employees on the formalities of the booking process. There were others standing at a distance admiring the car.

Mainak Majumdar, an information technology professional posted in the U.S., had come to one of the showrooms to book a car for his wife.

Asked why he chose Nano, he replied: “It is built with indigenous technology but the features are almost similar to the car that I own in the U.S. Also, since there is so much of hype around this car, I want to try it out.”

http://hallosushant.blogspot.com/

Some people, however, seemed chagrined that the car was being manufactured in a plant in Gujarat instead of at Singur in West Bengal.

Shyamal Chakroborty is one of them. “The people of the State do not know what they have lost. Had this car been launched from here, it could have changed the industrial landscape of the entire State,” he said.

Many visitors

“We are getting a very encouraging response. Many people are visiting our showroom to enquire about the car. Some of them are also booking it on the spot,” said Binod Agarwal, director of one of the largest Tata Motors showrooms here.

The Nano Effect:The people’s car is a game changer for the auto business (TOI Reports)

tata nano The 1 lakh peoples car

You’ve come a long way, Nano. With its formal launch, the “people’s car” is finally ready to rev. It’s been a rough ride though, from the time Ratan Tata spoke of making a low-cost car in 2003 and Nano’s showcasing at an auto expo in early 2008. Had all gone well, the world’s cheapest car would have rolled out from Singur, West Bengal, end-October 2008. But a land-related agitation subjected the project to unsavoury politicisation. Tata Motors moved Nano to Sanand in Gujarat and made interim production plans in Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. But with production schedules turning turtle, the future looked uncertain. With Nano now ready for bookings, the dogged pursuit of a business goal with a huge and positive social outreach is approaching fruition.
Nano’s day out served as a mood enhancer not only in terms of lifting market sentiment, but also for crisis-hit automakers and consumers weighing the price tags of goods and services. The brand will revolutionise car ownership, wooing as it does a consumer segment with a big demand potential. Since its conceptualisation, Nano has represented a game changer for the auto trade, whether in terms of cost-efficient engineering, fuel efficiency or target buyers. Bajaj Auto is to roll out a rival in 2011, whose competitive edge on mileage will reportedly require a slightly higher price. Maruti, front runner in the compact car trade, is said to be waiting for Nano to make a splash before framing its business response. Firms like Hyundai, Toyota and Honda are gearing up to compete, with their own products.
The Nano effect has been felt in the used car market, especially in the unorganised sector. Demand reportedly nosedived by 25-30 per cent in the days preceding Nano’s debut. Falling prices are expected to slide further for small car models made by Maruti or Hyundai once Nano hits the streets. All of this can’t but enthuse the aam aadmi in a nation where millions of two-wheeler drivers hope to graduate to four-wheel vehicles. If Nano reflects anything, it’s this aspirational facet of India’s domestic demand-driven economy.
While the low-cost car’s popularisation is welcome, it must have the infrastructural support it needs. Most Indian city roads creak under the weight of vehicular traffic. Once the cheap car trend catches on, it would exacerbate the traffic congestion problem that’s become a countrywide urban nightmare. Plus there’s vehicular pollution. Making cars prohibitively expensive is a socially unacceptable solution to such issues in a democratic country where, by global standards, the number of cars per thousand persons is woefully small. Creation and upgrade of road infrastructure and user-friendly mass transport systems are the way ahead.

The Nano will be launched on 23rd March, 2009. The car will be available in both standard and deluxe versions. Both versions will offer a wide range of body colours, and other accessories so that the car can be customised to an individual's preferences.

Stylish, comfortable

- Designed with a family in mind, the Nano has a roomy passenger compartment with generous leg space and head room.

- Can comfortably seat four persons. Four doors with high seating position make ingress and egress easy.

- With a length of 3.1 metres, width of 1.5 metres and height of 1.6 metres, with adequate ground clearance, it can effortlessly manoeuvre on busy roads in cities as well as in rural areas.

- Its mono-volume design, with wheels at the corners and the powertrain at the rear, enables it to uniquely combine both space and manoeuvrability, which will set a new benchmark among small cars.

Why Nano?
The name 'Nano' was chosen as it denotes high technology and small size.
Most eagerly waited car
People world over were keen to see what Tata Motors' People's Car looked like, and know more about it. The Tata Motors website saw nearly 7.9 million hits on January 10 (the day the Nano was unveiled), while the Tata Nano website saw 4 million hits in 30 hours, making these sites among the busiest in the world.

The Nano website (www.tatanano.com) was developed within a short timeframe of 1.5 months and with limited resources.

The entire portal has been built on open source technologies, involving minimum investment, following the essence of the Nano -
low cost, but high technology.

Fuel-efficient engine

- The Nano has a rear-wheel drive, all-aluminium, two-cylinder, 623 cc, 33 PS, multi point fuel injection petrol engine. This is the first time that a two-cylinder gasoline engine is being used in a car with single balancer shaft.

- The lean design strategy has helped minimise weight, which helps maximise performance per unit of energy consumed and delivers high fuel efficiency.

- Performance is controlled by a specially designed electronic engine management system.

nano look and style colours and engine detail

Meets all safety requirements

- The Nano's safety performance exceeds current regulatory requirements. With an all sheet-metal body, it has a strong passenger compartment, with safety features such as crumple zones, intrusion-resistant doors, seat belts, strong seats and anchorages, and the rear tailgate glass bonded to the body.

- Tubeless tyres further enhance safety.

Environment-friendly

- The Nano's tailpipe emission performance exceeds regulatory requirements. In terms of overall pollutants, it has a lower pollution level than two-wheelers being manufactured in India today.

- The high fuel efficiency also ensures that the car has low carbon dioxide emissions, thereby providing the twin benefits of an affordable transportation solution with a low carbon footprint.
