UNICEF: Stop Child Abuse Now! - Be the voice of those who cannot speak up

ARE THERE 100,000 PEOPLE WHO CARE ENOUGH TO STOP CHILD ABUSE?
Did you know that an average of 7 children in Malaysia suffered abuse every day in 2008, and these were only the reported cases? Many more experience abuse in silence and behind closed doors. Like all children, they too have a right to a happy childhood, free of abuse. Abuse robs a child of their health, development and dignity. It can also leave invisible scars on children, their families and society that last lifetimes, if not generations. You can become a Campaigner for Children by hopping on our bus, and rallying others to join us on our journey to end child abuse in Malaysia.

UNICEF has started a nationwide movement called "Get on Board" to provide the public with the information, insight and resources to stop child abuse. This knowledge will empower everyone to protect the children in our families and communities. Let us show our children that at least a 100,000 of us care. The more people who raise their hand to be counted, the stronger the campaign becomes to deter an abuser from hurting a child.

Take action now via the useful resources below:

1. Check below link to see what you can do to end child abuse in Malaysia..

2. To increase your understanding, do download and read the Fact Sheets on Child Abuse via the link below

Example of Myth Vs Fact from the fact sheets:
MYTH 1: It's only abuse if there is physical violence.
FACT: Physical abuse is just one form of abuse. Children can also be harmed by emotional abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. These types of abuse are usually hidden from sight and, as a result, people are less likely to take action and help the chidren.

3. Spread the awareness via sharing these video to others.

4. Share  ask your friends to come on board

5. Learn  about child abuse, what it is, and what you can do

Last but not least, by providing your name and email address, you can be one of the 100,00 to say you care enough to put an end to child abuse.

Tokyo Two: Online March for Justice

Background - August 21, 2010

Greenpeace anti-whaling activists Toru Suzuki and Junichi Sato (the "Tokyo Two") have been facing trial for nearly two years in Japan and now a verdict will be announced on Monday September 6th.

In 2008, Junichi and Toru exposed a scandal involving government corruption entrenched within the tax-payer funded Japanese whaling industry. They are on trial for theft and trespass, and the prosecutor has asked they be jailed for one year and six months.

It is not just Junichi and Toru's liberty that is at stake here - it is the fundamental right to peacefully investigate and expose corruption, to challenge authority and to do so without fear of persecution.

"Two activists from Greenpeace Japan face trial and a potential ten year prison sentence for exposing a scandal striking at the heart of Japan's government whaling operation." greenpeace.org

Bloggers Unite: People First: Empowering People With Disabilities

"One in every five Americans is affected by a disability. This means that approximately 54 million people in the U.S. alone are working everyday to gain greater independence and create new possibilities for themselves.

Within the United States, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has done much to eliminate the barriers and discrimination people with disabilities have faced for so long. Yet, about three quarters of adults with disabilities are unemployed--even though most would prefer to be working. And, internet access for people with disabilities is about half of what it is for those without disabilities."
(Source: www.bloggersunite.org)
Yes, awareness can reveal the true. Let's read through these true/false statements to justify your mind in seconds:

"
1.“Most of disabled people are born with their disability.”
False. Only 15% of disabled people were disabled when they were born or under 16 years old.

2.“The large majority of people with physical disability use a wheelchair.”
False. Let’s take the French example : 8 millions of people are physically disabled, 370 000 of whom use a wheel chair.

3.“A receptionist with hearing impairment cannot hold his/her job any longer.”
False. Thanks to an equipment (amplifier), she can keep doing her / his job.

4.“My establishment is not accessible, I cannot employ a disabled person.”
False. All disabilities do not request specific equipment. Moreover, many technical and financial aids allow you to convert the establishment to the special needs of your employee.

5.“Even if I am healthy, I can be confronted with disability in my working life.”
True. One on two persons will have a disability or disabling disease on a permanent or reversible way." (Source: 10 good reasons to employ a disabled worker in the hospitality industry)

Save Dolphins: Put an end to the slaughter

This is one of the videos which shows how "some" "human beings" treat our innocent dolphins nowadays.

Get Adobe Flash player

"The Cove exposes the slaughter of more than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises off the coast of Japan every year, and how their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan and other parts of Asia, often labeled as whale meat. The majority of the world is not aware this is happening. The focus of the Social Action Campaign for The Cove is to create worldwide awareness of this annual practice as well as the dangers of eating seafood contaminated with mercury and to pressure those in power to put an end to the slaughter."

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked Haiti on Tuesday (2010)

We here at Xaivier Blog send our thoughts and prayers out to those affected by this disaster.

Support Doctors Without Borders in Haiti

The citizens of Haiti are currently dealing with devastation and suffering that few of us can even imagine. Tuesday's earthquake has reduced large parts of the the country's capitol, Port Au Prince, to rubble and devastated their already poor infrastructure making the task of delivering aid extremely difficult.
Official estimates from the region say that approximately 3 million people have been affected by this disaster and that somewhere between 45,00 to 50,000 people are may have died as a result of the earthquake.

Doctors Without Borders is one of the organizations in the best position to provide critical medical care to those affected by this disaster. Additional Doctors Without Borders widgets can be found at http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/donate/haiti-share.cfm

Food crisis + financial crisis

The food price crisis, dubbed a "silent tsunami" for the world’s poor, is far from over. A recent study revealed that food prices are higher than they were 12 months ago in 46 developing countries. In nine of the countries, food prices are the highest on record.

The current economic crisis, first felt in developed nations, is now impacting on developing nations too. People living in these regions have much less to cushion the blow of an economic downturn and hunger is on the increase. The combination of high food prices and the economic downturn has the makings of a humanitarian.

In the Horn of Africa, where climate change is aggravating the situation, the effects of the two crises are especially harsh. And as the global economic and financial crises compound the food crisis, hunger and malnutrition are likely to increase further.
